Life Lines for January 3, 2010

The following statement was made by Obama on December 15, 2009 when speaking of the massive government takeover of the American healthcare industry. At the White House, the president said his congressional allies were "on the precipice" of a historic accomplishment that has eluded presidents and lawmakers for generations, adding the emerging bill includes "all the criteria that I laid out" in a speech to a joint session of Congress earlier in the year. Precipice is an interesting choice of words.

What is the meaning of the word? Precipice: (1) An overhanging or extremely steep mass of rock, such as a crag or the face of a cliff. (2) The brink of a dangerous or disastrous situation.

Using the word precipice in his statement leads me to believe that
even Obama knows that this legislation is bad for the country. Trouble is, he doesn’t care as long as it suits his agenda.
On December 24, 2009 the Senate passed the
government‐run health care bill that included massive taxpayer funding of abortion and opened the door for the Obama administration to force insurance companies to pay for abortions. With passage, the two chambers of Congress have approved very different legislation. On the very day that the Senate voted to pass the government-run healthcare bill 41% of voters nationwide were in favor of the health care bill, but 55% were strongly opposed. This was the fifth straight week with support for the legislation between 38% and 41%.

But there are specific policy issues that also raise challenges as the Democrats try to pass a final version of this legislation in early 2010. Fifty-four percent (54%) say taxpayer-funded health insurance should be prohibited from covering abortion, up six points from September. The House version of the legislation includes such a prohibition, but the Senate version does not.

Fourteen percent (14%) of U.S. voters say health insurance paid for or subsidized with government funding should be required to cover abortions. Twenty-nine percent (29%) say the legislation should have no requirements one way or the other.

On another hot-button topic, 87% believe that before anyone receives government health care subsidies, they should be required to prove they are legally in the United States.

President Obama and congressional Democrats insist the health care plan will not cover illegal immigrants, but their legislation does not require proof of citizenship for those seeking taxpayer-funded health care help.

Among senior citizens, the group most likely to use the health care system, just 33% are in favor while 60% are opposed. The reason that senior citizens are opposed to the current form of healthcare legislation is because they will receive rationed care … a fact that few liberals are going to acknowledge.

As I think about the proposed government takeover of our healthcare system I begin to wonder what Jesus would say about all of this. I don’t propose to know what the political views of Jesus would be except to say that He healed the sick and showed mercy to the poor, not the government. The parable of the good Samaritan is a great illustration for consideration when thinking about the current healthcare situation.

Luke 10:3134.
“A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead. 31Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33But a Samaritan while traveling came near him; and when he saw him, he was moved with pity. 34He went to him and bandaged his wounds, having poured oil and wine on them.Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him.

The parable of the Good Samaritan tells us what we need to do to care for those in need; it does not tell us by what means we are to do this, although someone could insist that the Good Samaritan took care of the man himself; he did not go to the local authorities for them to do it.

A fresh blanket of snow covered the ground as a speeding ambulance raced down a two-lane country road in the cold night, leading to a small Illinois metro-east hospital in Maryville, Illinois while transporting a newborn baby boy. He had been born within the hour and first-responders were working feverishly to revive his tiny body. Inside the emergency room they were met with resuscitation equipment, but it was too late. He was pronounced dead on arrival, the victim of another late-term botched abortion.

The mother, a 16 year old, delivered him in the toilet after starting her three-day abortion procedure over at Granite City’s little slaughterhouse, Hope Clinic for Women, on Tuesday. Missouri abortionist and former felon Allen Palmer was the hired assassin for the day. The young mother stated that the abortion staff kept giving her injections. The next night, she went into full term labor, went into the bathroom, and delivered her baby boy into the cold waters of the toilet. She left him to call Hope Clinic. She notified the on call person of the situation. They told her to, “Bring the baby in a bag back to the clinic in the morning.” She panicked and called 911.

At the hospital, emergency personnel took one look at the baby and were saddened and disgusted. They listened to the mother’s abortion sequence and the abortion mill’s response to her emergency home delivery. Just on appearances, this little one was perfectly formed, but dead on arrival. He weighed 3 lbs. 5 oz. and was at 31 weeks gestation. In nine weeks he would have been considered full-term.

The hospital has called for a full investigation because Illinois supposedly does not allow babies to be killed after viability at 24 weeks. Who is policing and regulating abortion mills in Illinois? No one. Do we expect the abortion mill to use the scout’s honor code? That’s like asking the fox to guard the hen house.

This baby would have survived. It appears his mother let him drown. She told paramedics she couldn’t handle picking him up out of the toilet, so she left him to die.

This horrific incident did not have to happen, but it does every day across our nation, especially inside late-term slaughterhouses such as Hope Clinic. The abortion mill gets away with murder while making money in the process. Abortion is evil and it has a rippling effect on everyone involved.

Someone or some organization needs to pursue this incident and hold the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation accountable for the discrepancies and inhumane treatment inside abortion mills such as Hope Clinic. Pray for all those involved, especially the eyewitnesses to this senseless event that they have the courage to persevere in their duty to expose the barbaric death of this baby, no matter the cost.

This is morally and ethically wrong! Anyone with a working heart knows this is wrong. This is not healthcare. With the acceptance of each and every abortion the conscience of our nation is dying. There are two victims in every abortion: A dead baby and a dead conscience.

Life Sunday is being observed both today and next Sunday in churches across our nation. There is an advertisement in today’s edition of the Journal-Courier filled with the names of citizens who boldly proclaim the sanctity of human life. There is a huge number of folks who are doggedly determined to keep on fighting to promote the value of the unborn, elderly and disabled among us.

One such group is Pro-Life Dynamics, based in Denton, TX, who launched a missile directly at Planned Parenthood in the fall of 2009 called Maafa 21. It is a documentary film exposing the truth about a plan to create “racial purity” that began 150 years ago and is still being carried out right now. Margaret Sanger, founder of today’s Planned Parenthood’s, was an integral part of the plot and that organization continues in carrying out her legacy. Maafa 21 is about the ties between the Nazis, the American eugenics movement and today’s “family planning” cartel. It’s about elitism, secret agendas, treachery and corruption at the highest levels of political and corporate America.

Maafa 21 exposes what our media has been hiding and politicians don’t want you to know.

for free! Recommitment to Life is being observed today at the Illinois State Capitol Rotunda, 2 p.m. (You will need to enter the capitol building at the north door and bring along a photo ID.

The Speaker for the event is Mark Harrington, Midwest Region Director, Center for Bio-Ethical Reform

A graduate of Ohio State University, Mark travels to universities debating students on bio-ethical issues like abortion, embryonic stem cell research, and cloning. As part of the innovative campus exhibit the, Genocide Awareness Project (GAP), Mark speaks at some of the nations largest universities reaching hundreds of thousands of college students each year. If there is an issue concerning life, Mark is typically at the forefront of the debate. He is considered one of the leading pro-life voices in the United States.

As President of the Pro-Life Institute, Mark speaks at conferences and seminars teaching others to think and act with a biblical worldview on topics in America‘s culture war.

Mark also hosts Activist Radio: The Mark Harrington Show. The Mark Harrington Show helps Christians think biblically as they approach the issues of the day. Also, as a frequent guest on both secular and Christian radio and television shows, Mark's message is clear: a biblical worldview on bio-ethical issues can compete in the market place if properly understood and articulated. Mark is also President of the Pro Life Institute.

Everyone is invited to attend this event and arm him or herself with the truth. The Bible says that the way to choose truth is to set your heart on God's laws. We must follow God's laws to find truth. Psalm 119:30. I have chosen the way of truth; I have set my heart on your laws.

The following quote was uttered on January 22, 2010 in front of our nation’s capitol as a sign of protest against the annual Walk for Life. "Today we celebrate the 37th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, which recognized a woman's constitutional right to legal abortion. However, we recognize that in 2010 women's ability to exercise this basic right is under attack as never before, not only by domestic terrorism but also in the halls of Congress," said NOW President Terry O'Neill. ."

(Those who attended bible class at Salem Lutheran Church on Sunday, January 24 were reminded by Rev. Al Schmidt that Roe v. Wade is an unconstitutional law and the decision was handed down from the U.S. Supreme Court on very shaky reasoning siting the 14th Amendment as the basis for the ruling).

O’Neill further stated, "A fetus is not a life, sorry. (Well Ms. O’Neill, you are wrong and the science proves you are wrong. A fetus … unborn human baby, is very much alive with their genetic profile present from the moment of conception. The life growing inside the mother’s womb is at conception and will always be until death, a human life). And no, nobody's religious conviction justifies taking women's ability to shape their own futures away from them."

The preceding sentence is particularly troubling to me because the very people who support such utter nonsense as that sentence are more than likely the same folks who support the religious rights of radical Islam. After all, the radicals who slammed the planes into buildings and that lonely field in Pennsylvania on Sept. 11, 2001 were just following their religious beliefs. Did that make it right?

Furthermore, many people, myself included, consider the liberal agenda of abortion, assisted suicide and euthnasia a form of religion so couldn’t the religious conviction which sacrifices innocent life on the altar of choice contradict what O’Neill spewed forth in her comment that “nobody’s religious conviction justifies taking women’s ability to shape their own futures away from them?” After all, approximately half of all aborted babies are unborn women and they have certainly had their futures ripped away from them.

On November 8, 2009, O’Neill made the following statements regarding proposed health care reform that came out of the House of Representatives. “Birth control and abortion are integral aspects of women's health care needs. Health care reform should not be a vehicle to obliterate a woman's fundamental right to choose. NOW calls on the Senate to pass a health care bill that respects women's constitutionally protected right to abortion and calls on President Obama to refuse to sign any health care bill that restricts women's access to affordable, quality reproductive health care.”

My response to the preceding statement from Nov. 8 is simply that abortion is not healthcare. Abortion is murder.

Many developed nations around the world have reached out to help the citizens of Haiti following the disastrous 7.0 scale earthquake that occurred on Tuesday, January 12.

Right there among organizations reaching out to help the Haitians is International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF). IPPF has launched a fundraising appeal in order to further their goals in this devastated pro-life nation. Within a day of the disaster, IPPF had sent out an appeal letter, seeking “urgent” support for their Haitian affiliate PROFAMIL.

IPPF, the world's largest abortion provider, claims that funds are needed in order to restore “basic medical services” at the PROFAMIL clinics. According to their letter, PROFAMIL has operated since 1984, providing “low-cost, quality sexual and reproductive healthcare.”

Rita Diller, national director of Stop Planned Parenthood stated, “Planned Parenthood, true to form, is using the disaster and the suffering in Haiti to raise money to perpetuate itself in its ongoing attack on decency, morality, and the right to be born. While millions of people are suffering unbelievably and are without the most basic necessities, Planned Parenthood wants to grab the donations that should be going to provide medical care, food, clothing, and housing, and funnel it to its local affiliate that pushes condoms on children as young as 10 years old,” she continued. “Planned Parenthood has no shame. What would you expect of an organization that killed over 305,000 innocent pre-born children last year alone?”

What strikes me as unconscionable regarding the actions of IPPF is the fact that they are seeking to add more death and despair through abortion in a nation that has already suffered thousands of deaths from the earthquake. IPPF continues to show its true colors as instruments of death. I ask that we all pray for the people of Haiti and also for the rescue and relief workers who are genuinely trying to help.

Today is Valentine’s Day … a day devoted to love. But I’d like to introduce you to another type of love story … a story of the love of one mother for her unborn child.

Letters to Darcy originated as a blog, written by a young woman from Texas named Tracy Ramos. The blog was comprised of a series of diary entries that Tracy wrote to her unborn daughter, Darcy, over the course of approximately nine months. Early in her pregnancy, Tracy learned Darcy had a rare, terminal genetic condition known as Trisomy 18.

Of people diagnosed with this disorder, about 95% die in utero, and for surviving
infants who live to term, less than 10% survive their first year of life. Tracy’s response to her unborn daughter Darcy is an incredible testiment to the sanctity of human life.

Black History is observed in the month of February and my daughter, Stephanie, and
I had the chance to visit the Civil Rights Museum while on a recent trip to Memphis,TN. The museum is located next to the Lorraine Hotel, the sight of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1968. We both found it to be informative, humbling and enlightening in regard to the plight of black Americans through the history of our nation. But I noticed one particular segment of black America that was not addressed at all and it seemed to be a glaring omission in a museum dedicated to civil rights, oppression and the mistreatment of humans.

The part that was lacking
any recognition was the black American holocaust that has been taking place on a daily basis for the past thirty‐seven years … abortion. The latest stats that I have researched on abortion on black American women revealed that currently one out of every two black American babies is aborted. That’s right … 50% of all abortions in our nation kill black American babies. Blacks make up 12% of our population, but have 36% of all abortions.

These numbers are unconscionable! Where is the outcry
from prominent black American leaders such as Jesse Jackson, Jr., Roland Burris, Al Sharpton, Maxine Waters, Charles Rangel, John Conyers, John Lewis, Sheila Jackson Lee, Gwen Moore and Barack Obama? Most of the preceding people mentioned support abortion and have a 100% voting record to prove it.

Abortion is both a
violation of civil rights and human rights and the moral damage it has and still continues to heap on our nation is a tragedy.

Proverbs 31:89. Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute. Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy.

Roe vs. Wade, the most widely recognized U.S. abortion case, allowed no "restrictions" on abortion in the first two trimesters. For the third trimester, the states were allowed to make some restrictions -- as long as they allowed abortions for "health" reasons. The companion decision, Doe vs. Bolton, then defined health so broadly that really, anything could pass muster.

The following is an excerpt from that decision. Medical judgment may be exercised in the light of all factors - physical, emotional, psychological, familial, and the woman's age - relevant to the wellbeing of the patient. All these factors may relate to health. Furthermore, prior to Roe and Doe, there was no such thing as a third trimester abortion. Abortion was, by definition, killing the fetus prior to viability. So post-viability abortions were not only invented but also held up as a sacred treasure and a supposed Constitutional right.

And unless you define "health" so broadly as to include family concerns, the whole idea of a post-viability "health" abortion is nonsensical on its face. If a pregnancy is endangering the mother's life or health, the standard of care has been to induce labor or perform a c-section, based on the woman's particular needs. With a c-section, the baby can be out of the womb and in the neonatal unit within a matter of minutes, the pregnancy is over, and medical professionals can then care for the mother. It's pure nonsense to say that it would preserve her "health" or her life to take additional steps to ensure that the fetus emerges dead.

The only logical reason to perform a post-viability abortion -- to stop during delivery to kill the baby -- is to achieve the death of the fetus, either for social reasons or because the baby may have a disability of some sort. (However, tests that supposedly reveal a child with a disability while in the womb have been proven false time after time.) After the Webster decision in 1989 and the Planned Parenthood vs. Casey decision in 1992, the Supreme Court allowed states to put some regulations (such as waiting periods or informed consent) into place, and allowed the states to be a bit firmer about exactly what constituted "health".

Still, no state can actually ban third trimester abortions, because of the "health" requirement in Doe. And, just for your information, the following states currently have no post-viability restrictions at all: Alaska, Colorado, Hawaii, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Vermont and West Virginia. Clearly, the work for life is far from over.

Job 10:8-12 Your hands fashioned and made me, and now you have destroyed me altogether.  Remember that you have made me like clay; and will you return me to the dust?  Did you not pour me out like milk and curdle me like cheese?  You clothed me with skin and flesh, and knit me together with bones and sinews.  You have granted me life and steadfast love, and your care has preserved my spirit.

How bad does it have to get for our nations leaders to stand up and say, “Enough is enough?”

A news story recently reported by LifeNews.com stated that officials were investigating an abortion center in that city after a woman died from a botched abortion last November. But, they found more than they could have imagined when they discovered the frozen remains of dozens of late-term babies who were killed in abortions from as long as thirty years ago.

The abortion center known as the Women’s Medical Society and run by Kermit Gosnell has seen its share of dubious activity over the years, but nothing as sickening as finding the bodies of the babies.

Gosnell’s abortion center has been shut down as the investigation into the death of one of his patients continues. It seems Gosnell gave the deceased woman massive amounts of painkillers as a result of the botched abortion. Furthermore, Gosnell is accused of illegally prescribing the painkillers and allowing an unlicensed staff member to participate in the abortion in question.

So far, as a result of the abortion death, Gosnell's medical license has been temporarily suspended, but he has not yet been charged with anything illegal.

Troy Newman, the president of the pro-life group Operation Rescue, stated that the suspension order described "deplorable and unsanitary" conditions at the clinic, indicating that "there was blood on the floor, and parts of aborted fetuses were displayed in jars." The suspension order declared Gosnell to be "an immediate and clear danger to the public health and safety." Newman further stated the notion that legalizing abortion made it safer for women is fiction.

"This is not the exception to the rule in our nation's abortion clinics. It is standard operating procedure," he said. "This clinic is no better than a back alley abortion mill, and in fact may be worse."

"Collecting the remains of dead babies over a 30 year time frame is reminiscent of the actions of deranged serial killers who keep body parts as trophies. It doesn't get much sicker than that," he added.

Clearly, people involved in the business of killing humans on a daily basis have no regard for the rights of humans and do not recognize the human body as the temple of the Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

Politics are very much in the news as both parties gear up for the mid-term November elections. Quite often choosing a political party and candidate becomes mind-numbing. Neither major political party has a completely biblical party platform. Democrats tend to emphasize personal rights (including "rights" to kill God's pre-born creations) to the detriment of personal responsibility. Republicans stress personal responsibility to the detriment of caring for those who are less well off.

Both political parties throw around the idea that the goal of being prosperous and well-off financially helps fulfill the American Dream. But, this so-called dream may not be God-pleasing if we trample on the rights of others in the pursuit of that dream.

And, despite political comments that the determination of the beginning of human life is "above one's pay grade," the Bible makes no bones about when human life begins. In fact, numerous prophets were called by God to serve him from the womb. Today, such a call could likely be answered by a choice to kill God's messenger.

Killing one of God's creatures in the name of personal choice is one of the most egregious "acceptable" sins allowed in the United States and around the world. It’s past time to hold politicians accountable for the slaughter that takes place in our nation on a daily basis. If you don’t agree, take another look at last week’s article.

I had big plans for my life. I was going to be a teacher and help guide young children in their thirst for knowledge. I especially wanted to teach elementary children because of their innocence and enthusiasm for life. Yes, I was going to be a teacher until my mother had an abortion and I was thrown away.

I was going to be a lawyer and not just any ordinary lawyer. I wanted to be a lawyer who would help bring about a change in the law of the land that allowed babies to be killed in their mother’s womb. You see, there has been over 52 MILLION babies killed in their mother’s womb since a U.S. Supreme Court decision said it was ok to do that in 1973. Yes, I was going to be a lawyer until my grandmother made my young mother get an abortion and I was thrown away.

I was going to be a research scientist and find a cure for an awful disease called cancer. You see, about 555,000 people die each year in the U.S. from some kind of cancer and I was going to help reduce the number of deaths from that disease as my life’s work. But, then my mother was told by her boyfriend that she had to “get rid of me” so she had an abortion and I was thrown away.

I knew from the very beginning of my life that I was someday going to be a preacher. I wanted to teach everyone about the love that God has for His people. I would travel to far away lands and bring hope to the hopeless. I was going to do God’s work until my mother’s doctor told my parents that I had a terrible disability and it would be better for everyone if my mother had an abortion. But wait! There’s nothing wrong with me and I’m going to spread the gospel of Jesus! Yes, that was my plan until my mother had an abortion and I was thrown away.

Jeremiah 1:5. "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations."

March 28 - Palm Sunday/Sunday of the Passion

Jesus’ journey during Holy Week from the triumphal entry to the torturous crucifixion really began in a fallopian tube. Jesus "made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant" (Philippians 2:7). That happened at Jesus’ conception in the fallopian tube of Mary. Celebrated on Thursday, March 25, the Annunciation of our Lord marks this event. The king who came into Jerusalem on a donkey and the mocked king who left Jerusalem carrying a cross was formed in a womb as we were. The next time you hear someone devalue life in the womb, remind them of Jesus’ journey.

Have you ever considered the similarities for Christianity and medical science? Both
have positive goals for the good of mankind and both are in the business of immortality.

Medical science draws from the tree of knowledge in order to give
people what they desire, not what they deserve. Christianity draws from God’s Son who was sent to wash away the sins of the world.

But, both also have huge
differences.

Medical science is designed to undo the wages of sin during our earthly
life while Christianity offers a savior through grace as the means of attaining eternal life. Both however, favor life over death. So, in light of this, how can medicine sink to the low level of KILLING 50 million unborn babies over the past 37 years?

Well, the
answer lies in the fact that the highest court in our nation has said it’s perfectly legal to kill an unborn child, even to the end of the pregnancy or ninth month. Pro‐aborts claim it’s unconstitutional to deny a woman’s right to choose to kill her unborn child. (Not to mention the fact that huge amounts of money is being made off the business of killing the unborn.)

What would our founding fathers have to say about
this “so‐called” right? We’ll never really know the answer to that but I highly suspect that had they had access to the modern science of embryology, they would be appalled that not all Americans (unborn babies) have the right to life.

Medical
science has proven beyond a doubt that there is a living human developing and that the development started at the moment of conception. From that very first moment, a new life begins to grow and has its own genetic code, separate from the mother. And, if there is no interference, it will grow into a fully formed human ready to enter the world at around 40 weeks of gestation.

All of us began in the same way; we just
looked different at our different stages of development. We must remain ever vigilant as our nation embarks on a dangerous path regarding the healthcare of its citizens. The fact is, abortion is NOT healthcare. We need to stand firm and speak out against expanding abortion coverage so that even more babies will die before birth. Don’t assume that what you hear from the mouth of a politician is right and true.

"Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.” Matthew 7:15.

God makes it very clear that He considers all human life, born and unborn, precious. In fact, all persons are so very precious to God that He sent His Son into the world to teach, preach and die a horrible death on the cross so that all might be saved and live eternally with Him in heaven. LIFE … that’s the message of Easter.

Healthcare reform the Obama way happened and it didn’t matter that the majority of Americans did not approve of that particular plan. There has been much said and printed about it since its passage and I have personally read and researched it to answer my own questions. While doing some research I happened across an article written by Michael Connelly, a retired attorney and constitutional law instructor from Texas and I am submitting just a couple of paragraphs from his article.

Mr. Connelly stated, ȁTo begin with, much of what has been said about the law and its implications is in fact true, despite what the Democrats and the media are saying.  The law does provide for rationing of health care, particularly where senior citizens and other classes of citizens are involved, free health care for illegal immigrants, free abortion services, and probably forced participation in abortions by members of the medical profession.

The Bill will also eventually force private insurance companies out of business, and put everyone into a government run system.  All decisions about personal health care will ultimately be made by federal bureaucrats, and most of them will not be health care professionals.  Hospital admissions, payments to physicians, and allocations of necessary medical devices will be strictly controlled by the government.”

Action is being taken to try and counteract the healthcare bill by means of lawsuits. Why? One very good reason is that this bill creates the greatest expansion of abortion since Roe V. Wade became law and it’s my hope and prayer that the abortion funding portion of the healthcare bill is overturned before ever going into effect. The tide of public opinion against further funding of abortion and healthcare rationing is very much on the side of the pro-life movement and we need to work diligently to keep fighting for life.

Just as we celebrated the resurrection of Jesus Christ to everlasting life on Easter Sunday, I have the certain assurance for eternal life. But, I also have hope in the cause of the pro-life movement. We are doing battle for our Lord and our work is righteous and God-pleasing, no matter what laws are passed in this nation. We have an “ace in the hole” that the pro-aborts do not have. GOD IS IN CONTROL and we know it!

“For the eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous, and His ears attend to their prayers. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.” 1 Peter 3:12.

At the end of March Judge Daniel Riley lifted a temporary restraining order on an
Illinois law passed in the 1995, but never enforced. The Parental Notification Law requires a minor girl’s guardian be notified before she is allowed to have an abortion. Although this is good news for those who cherish life, the law will still not go into effect because Judge Riley is allowing sufficient time for appeals to take place.

The law simply requires that doctors must notify the guardians of a young woman 17 years old or younger 48 hours prior to the girl getting an abortion. The law in its present form can bypass parental notification by going before a judge.

Judge Riley had the following to say about his decision. “The law is an unfortunate piece of legislation that discriminates between minors who choose to give birth and those who choose to have an abortion.” Judge Riley went on to say that he found the law constitutional.

Presently more than two‐dozen states have similar laws in place. I find it absurd that parents/guardians cannot be informed if their daughter is contemplating an abortion. Opponents site circumstances of incest as the reason for not enforcing the law, but I find that unreasonable for the following reason.

Planned Parenthood
encounters situations of minors seeking abortions every day and a great number of these cases involve the minor girl having been impregnated by an adult. Yet, PP fails to report these crimes to the authorities. PP is obligated by law to report these crimes, but in far too many cases, they fail to follow the law.

Parental notification is a good law and we should put pressure on the Illinois Attorney’s General office, (Lisa Madigan) to enforce this law that was passed some 15 years ago. Unfortunately, the office of the Illinois AG is on the opposite side of life on this issue.

On Tuesday, April 13, 2010, Nebraska spoke out FOR LIFE. Nebraska lawmakers passed a bill banning abortion at 20 weeks or later over concern for fetal pain. This bill marks a major victory for citizens who are concerned about abortions taking place in this country. Julie Schmit-Albin from Nebraska Right to Life said, "The Nebraska legislature has taken a bold step which should ratchet up the abortion debate across the nation. What we didn't know in 1973 in Roe versus Wade ... we know now."

This law will help bring about change for the abortion industry … a change that will not go unchallenged. The pro-aborts are sure to line up and take aim at the new law because it will hit the abortion clinics right where it will hurt them the most … in the wallet! Late term abortions are very expensive, running in the thousands of dollars.

Fr. Frank Pavone of Priests for Life stated, "Until now, our laws have shown greater concern for laboratory animals and cattle that are slaughtered than for babies in the womb. With the Abortion Pain Prevention Act, Nebraska is beginning to change this. Every state should look to do the same."

I applaud the lawmakers of Nebraska for this law and even though it still allows abortions to take place, it also shows that our nation is taking small steps to curb the slaughter of American citizens in the womb. It will be interesting in the coming weeks and months to witness the “howling” that will take place from the pro-abort crowd over this recent small victory for life. No doubt their arguments will range from who “really” knows when a fetus can feel pain to the law is “unconstitutional.”

God says through Isaiah, "Trample my courts no more! Bring no more worthless offerings…Your festivals I detest…When you spread out your hands, I close my eyes to you; though you pray the more, I will not listen. Your hands are full of blood! Wash yourselves clean…learn to do good. Make justice your aim: redress the wronged, hear the orphan’s plea, defend the widow" (Isaiah 1:13-17).

With the impending retirement of Justice Stevens, President Obama will be performing one of the most important acts required of a U.S. President. Obama will have the task of appointing a new member to our U.S. Supreme Court, probably sometime this summer.

On April 21, Obama made it very clear that he will seek to appoint a justice who will uphold the unconstitutional Roe v. Wade tragedy. He stated the following: "I am somebody who believes that women should have the ability to make often very difficult decisions about their own bodies and issues of reproduction. Obviously this has been a hugely contentious issue in our country for a very long time. I will say the same thing that every president has said since this issue came up, which is I don't have litmus tests around any of these issues. But I will say that I want somebody who is going to be interpreting our Constitution in a way that takes into account individual rights, and that includes women's rights. And that's going to be something that's very important to me, because I think part of what our core constitutional values promote is the notion that individuals are protected in their privacy and their bodily integrity, and women are not exempt from that."

It seems to me that bodily integrity directly refers to abortion, but that should not come as a surprise to anyone who is even remotely aware of the president’s position on abortion.

However, the fact remains that the government does in fact have laws in place that place limits on what a person can do with their own body. Prostitution and public nakedness are just two examples how there are laws in place which limit what we can do “with our own bodies.” Obama also stated that he is concerned about individual rights. That’s admirable, but too bad it doesn’t include American citizens in the womb.

It can be very difficult for Christians to obey the government when we do not always agree with the leaders of the government. But, I am reminded by God’s Word that God created government to establish order, punish those who do wrong and to promote justice. We are to pay our taxes, obey the laws and show respect for our government.

Yet St. Peter makes it clear that if the law of the land contradicts God’s law, we should obey God’s law. Does this include speaking out against the law that is in opposition to the law of God? Yes, I believe it does, as long as we do it with respect and recognize that ultimately we must accept the government’s authority over us.

God will deal with those who oppose His law in His own good time. Christians, must, in the meantime, educate those who would listen on the evils of abortion. We read in 2 Kings how God feels about killing children.

"They mutilated their sons and daughters by fire…till the Lord, in his great anger against Israel, put them away out of his sight" (2 Kings 17:17-18).

Today is a special day set aside to honor our mothers. Mother’s Day has been recognized in many different ways throughout U.S. history, but President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed May 9, 1914, the first Mother’s Day officially and the second Sunday in May every year became a national holiday in the USA. People initially observed “Mother’s Day” by attending church and gradually, by sending letters, cards, gifts and flowers.

Motherhood is an important role that our Lord chooses to give to many women. He also commands Christian mothers through His Word, how to nurture the gift He has given to them. Deuteronomy 6:6-7 instructs mothers to be available to their children. “These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”

In Proverbs 22:6 the Lord instructs mothers to train their children to develop his/her skills and to find their individual gifts. “Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.”

The Bible contains many, many more verses to give guidance to both mothers and fathers in raising their children. Also, the Bible does not say that every woman will be a mother. But, it does counsel those women whom the Lord blesses with children that they should take the responsibility very seriously. Why? Because every child is a gift from God (Psalm 127:3 Sons are a heritage from the Lord, children a reward from him.)

God values the life of each child, born and unborn. Today, as we celebrate Mother’s Day, let each of us say a prayer for mothers who find themselves with an unplanned pregnancy … a prayer that they will choose life for their child. His Word cries out! This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Choose life so that you and your children may live, and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to His voice and hold fast to Him.

A 78,000 square foot Planned Parenthood killing center opened in Houston, TX on May 11, 2010. This new facility will be dedicated to performing late-term abortions … abortions on viable babies. They are planning on killing babies in the womb up to 25 weeks, that’s six months gestation. Babies have been born at 22 weeks and survived when given proper medical care.

The planners for the opening of this monstrous killing center are ecstatic with this milestone on the celebration of their 75th anniversary. “A plan you can love with” is a slogan that may be suitable for a life insurance policy designed to provide for your children. However, it’s actually the slogan for Planned Parenthood of Houston and Southeast Texas, a 21 million dollar organization that reportedly performed 8,200 abortions last year. When they do open their doors, it will become the largest Planned Parenthood abortion facility in the U.S.

Planned Parenthood also receives funding from the U.S. government, you and I, no matter how many times the Obama administration may try and deny it.

I believe that Indiana’s Rep. Mike Pence summed it up very well in a speech he gave in February of this year at CPAC in Washington, D.C. “The largest abortion provider in America should not be the largest recipient of federal funding under Title 10,” Pence said. “The time has come to defund any and all funding to Planned Parenthood of America.”  He further stated, “And finally, to reverse American decline we should recognize that our present crisis is not merely economic and political, but moral in nature. We must win back America for the fundamental traditional values of the American people:  the sanctity of life, and the sanctity of marriage.” I totally agree with Rep. Pence.

According to its 2007-2008 annual report, the Planned Parenthood Federation of America received $349.6 million in taxpayer funds through government grants and contracts.

This has happened because too many folks have remained silent for far too long.

In closing, despite the many times that Obama stated that no taxpayer funds will be used for abortion in his healthcare plan, the facts reveal that abortion will indeed be paid for under his healthcare plan and it will use taxpayer funds. Not only does the law subsidize health plans that cover abortion, it also opens the door to direct federal funding of abortions at so-called Community Health Centers.

The law appropriates $11 billion over five years to approximately 1,250 different Community Health Centers, and there are no restrictions to prevent that money from paying for abortions. On its website, Planned Parenthood claims that 850 Community Health Centers are run by Planned Parenthood affiliates.

In Psalm 106 God speaks specifically against killing innocent children and babies. He says of His people; They mingled with the nations and adopted their customs. They worshipped their idols which became a snare to them. They sacrificed their sons and their daughters to demons. They shed innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan and the land was desecrated by their blood.

The 2010 Walk for Life in Washington D.C. this past January reportedly drew in excess of 400,000 pro-life citizens. By comparison, Planned Parenthood’s “Stop Stupak” rally in December of 2009 had about 1,300 attendees.

Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL who happened upon the pro-lifers marching in Washington D.C. lamented, “There so many of them, and they are so young.” Keenan also remarked that she “is troubled that such passion has faded among the youth on her side of the movement.” What puzzles me about such statements from Keenan is the fact that NARAL and the pro-aborts are concerned about the younger generation being more pro-life than their own generation. Isn’t it supposed to be all about “choice” according to NARAL, NOW, Planned Parenthood, etc?

If they are so “pro-choice” then why are they troubled if someone chooses life instead of death for their baby? It seems that NARAL has more to worry about than just the Walk for Life held each January in Washington D.C. Kristan Hawkins of Students for Life of America recently stated that “the fears expressed by the pro-abortion giant are playing out visibly on college campuses, where she says, ȁpro-life groups are routinely more vigorous and longer-lasting than pro-abortion groups.”

Hawkins had more encouraging words for pro-lifers when she said, “groups such as Planned Parenthood, NARAL and the Feminist Majority Network struggle to maintain campus chapters. They all are incredibly well-funded, have a lot more money than Students for Life of America, yet none of them can keep active groups.” So even though it seems as if everything is stacked against those of us involved in the fight for life, we must always remember that God is in control.

“The real question today is not when human life begins, but, what is the value of human life? The abortionist who reassembles the arms and legs of a tiny baby to make sure all its parts have been torn from its mother’s body can hardly doubt whether it is a human being. The real question for him and for all of us is whether that tiny human life has a God-given right to be protected by the law- the same right we have.” ~Ronald Reagan

Life Lines for May 30, 2010

Today is the day we observe Memorial Day. It was first observed on May 30, 1868, for the purpose of decorating the graves of the Civil War dead. Memorial Day was declared a federal holiday in 1971. Now, it recognizes all of those who died in the wars our nation fought as well as all of our loved ones who have passed on.

I thought about the sacrifices that have been made on our behalf by our brave men and women in military service and wondered what characteristics make up a good soldier. A person would certainly have to be able to take orders or face the consequences of certain punishment. Christians should also follow our leader, Jesus Christ, yet so many of us take obedience to our Lord lightly.

A good soldier would need to be a fighter and not retreat when facing the enemy. Christians are also called to “Fight the good fight of faith” and not shrink from this command.

A good soldier needs to be familiar with the ways of the enemy and be skilled in the use of weapons against his enemy. At the same time, the good soldier looks out for the welfare of his comrades while facing the enemy.

Finally, the soldier needs to remain true and faithful, willing to endure pain and suffering, even to the point of death, for the ones he is charged to protect.

The role of a good soldier runs parallel to the life of Jesus and the example He set for all believers.

We Christians are charged to protect precious life entrusted to us by the author of all life.

Since the U.S. Supreme Court decided Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton in 1973, nearly 51 million babies have been killed in the womb. This staggering number of deaths is the direct result of those two decisions. Who will hear the cries of these preborn babies? Who will be their voice? Who will mourn these deaths? Who will fight for the rights of these unborn Americans?

For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Psalm 139:13-14

Life Lines for June 6, 2010

A Rasmussen poll released on May 24, 2010 showed a new low for pro-abortion President Obama since he took office. Furthermore, the level of support for repealing the new health care law that includes taxpayer funding for abortion reached an all time high. The poll indicated that 63 percent of Americans want to repeal the healthcare law compared with 32 percent of Americans who oppose repealing the law.

Pollster Scott Rasmussen stated, "While opposition to the bill has remained as consistent since its passage as it was beforehand, this marks the first time that support for repeal has climbed into the 60s. It will be interesting to see whether this marks a brief bounce or indicates a trend of growing opposition.”

Running parallel to the poll on the healthcare law, a Gallup poll taken on May 15, 2010 revealed that 51 percent of Americans now consider themselves to be pro-life rather than pro-choice on the issue of abortion. Gallup also reported that this is the first time a majority of those polled gave that answer in the 15 years that Gallup has asked the question.

These polls are very encouraging for those of us involved in the pro-life movement, despite having the most pro-abortion president in our nation’s history serving in the White House.

Yes, we are encouraged by the current trend taking place among our citizens and their views on life, but we cannot stop or let up on educating people on the horrors of abortion. Therefore, the most vitally important thing that YOU can do is to become personally involved. Unless YOU become involved, our gains will become losses. Educate yourself and then others and then join a pro-life group.

Vote pro-life because we will continue to spin our wheels unless those who support and promote abortion are replaced with leaders who respect life.

Finally, pray, pray, pray for the unborn. Plead with God to intervene and put and end to this senseless killing of the unborn.

If my people, who are called by my name, humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land. II Chronicles 7:14.

Life Lines for June 13, 2010

Few social issues in America today evoke emotions like the subject of abortion. The time, debate, stress and emotional turmoil by parties on both sides of the issue in trying to educate our citizens is mind-boggling. Some folks simply give up due to frustration and others stay out of the debate because they feel it isn’t any of their business to get involved. But, is that the right thing to do as Christians? If God’s people stay silent and uninvolved on the issue of abortion, then that leaves the field wide-open for the pro-aborts to advance their liberal agenda.

Have you ever seriously wondered what God thinks about abortion? Do you think the over 50 MILLION UNBORN BABIES that have been killed through abortion bothers Him? Does God consider the unborn child a person or a blob of tissue?

God’s Word tells us that He has a lot to say about the taking of innocent life. “Thou shalt not kill” refers to murder, the premeditated and deliberate taking of a person’s life. Psalms 127:3 reveals “Children are indeed a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb, a reward.” So both the abortionist and the mother of the unborn child are a party to killing that child. They will be held accountable to God because of what they did. Will we be held accountable for not doing anything to fight against abortion?

Rescue those being led away to death, hold back those staggering toward slaughter. If you say “But we knew nothing of this,” does not He who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not He who guards your life know it? Will He not repay each person according to what he has done? Proverbs 24:11.

Life Lines for June 20, 2010

Today is a day that we honor our fathers. The idea for creating a special day for fathers began in Spokane, Washington. Sonora Smart Dodd, who had been raised by her father after the death of her mother, thought of the idea of Father’s Day while she was listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909. Sonora wanted her father to know how special he was to her and since his birthday was in June, she chose to hold the first Father’s Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June, 1909.

In 1926, a National Father’s Day Committee was formed in New York City and in 1956, it was recognized by a Joint Resolution of Congress. Finally in 1972, President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father’s Day to be held on the third Sunday of June.

This Father’s Day is especially sad for my children and I since it is the first Father’s Day since the death of husband and father, Rich Strubbe.

But, it will also be a sad day for countless “forgotten fathers” who have lost their child through the act of abortion. In many cases, these men were responsible for the mother choosing abortion, either by persuasion or coercion. In countless times day in and day out, babies are killed in the womb, not solely due to the choice of the mother, but the choice of the father. In these cases, the father failed to protect and defend the child he helped to conceive.

On the flip side, fathers who tried to stop the abortion find themselves excluded by law from any decision on the life or death of the baby. Studies have shown that men also suffer from the sin of abortion and are in need of healing programs, just like the mothers.

I hope that on this special day for fathers that we pray for all fathers, those who father unexpected babies and those who father welcome babies that they and the baby’s mother choose life.

This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have ser before you life and death, blessings and curses. Choose life so that you and your children may live, and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice ad hold fast to him. Deuteronomy 30:19-20.

It seems that when supporters for life inch forward a step or two, the pro-death
advocates come up with something else for us to fight against.

On June 17, 2010, an FDA advisory committee cast two separate votes, 11-0 both times, to give the go ahead on a brand new abortion drug named Ella. This drug was developed in France by HRA Pharma and has been deemed safe and effective by our own FDA. The panel made its decision using data from (2) phase III clinical trials the French drug maker, HRA Pharma, sponsored.

Wendy Wright, the president of Concerned Women for America had the following to say about Ella.

“The drug sponsor couldn’t provide information on whether Ella can cause birth defects, or what happens to women who are pregnant who take it. And yet the committee strongly recommended not giving a woman a pregnancy test.”

Wright further stated, “in Europe, Ella is contra-indicated (not to be used) in pregnancies. But the FDA committee voted to not to test women to detect if they’re pregnant. They are telling doctors to be willfully blind when giving the drug.”

Wright concluded, “The committee voted to deceive women.”

Donna Harrison, an MD and current president of the American Association of Pro-Life OB/GYN, was also present and testified at the recent FDA hearing. She stated the drug should not be approved, “because there is insufficient data in the company’s trials to conclude what effect, if any, ulipristal has on pregnancy outcomes if a woman becomes pregnant despite taking the drug.”

The FDA plans to approve prescription distribution for Ella, but that was also the case with the Plan B drug until the pro-aborts lobbied for over the counter sales. This cleared the way for the drug to be made available to more women, including minors who could take the drug without a physician present or even parental consent. According the a recent report from LifeNews.com, the FDA panel wouldn’t even consider publishing a warning label on the drug informing patients of potential problems and the abortifacient properties.

Students for Life of America have launched a petition drive against the FDA decision. The petition is imploring Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius to oppose the FDA’s final approval for Ella. The main argument for the petition is the fact that the drug is being dubbed as a contraceptive pill when in fact the drug not only does NOT prevent pregnancy, it causes abortions in the very earliest stages of a new human life.

Kristen Hawkins, the director of Students for Life, stated, “we want the Secretary to know that pro-life Americans will not tolerate these new life destroying and deceptive tactics from the abortion industry.”

The preceding words from a couple of our nation’s past leaders still hold true today as we celebrate the birthday of our wonderful nation.

God has indeed blessed our nation with bright minds, religious freedom, and a wealth of resources. As Americans, we have the freedom to choose many things that affect our daily lives … including the choice to kill our unborn children.

Why have we Christians allowed this slaughter to continue? This nation elected the most proabortion (pro-death) president in its history in November of 2008. Why? Because the majority of Americans were less concerned with the lives of our future children than with they were with the rhetoric of “hope and change”.

Under President Obama, our nation has seen the floodgates for abortion opened wide to promote abortion here in our nation and also abroad, using the money of the American taxpayer.

Have you ever considered how long God will continue to bless our nation if we continue to choose death as the answer to problems? Has abortion been good for America? For women? For babies? Did abortion "liberate" women and free them from "male oppression?" Did it give them "control" over their bodies and lives as some feminists promised?

Or, has abortion hurt women, bringing them pain, shame, guilt
and regrets? How many more babies will die? How many more women will be injured?

Let's work together to ban abortion. It's time to speak up for women and
their babies. I truly believe that we have arrived at a tipping point in this great land and if we don’t put a stop to the slaughter of the innocents, our nation will fall as others from past history who chose to ignore the Word of God.

Live as free man, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil. I Peter 2:16.

The following article was written by Wesley Smith and appeared in the June 29, 2010 edition of “Secondhand Smoke”

A new test is in the works that will allow Down fetuses to be detected without the risks of current screening. From the story:

A quick inexpensive blood test for Down’s syndrome that could save the lives of hundreds of unborn babies each year is being developed by scientists. The ‘holy grail’ of diagnosis, it would pick up signs of the disease from a few drops of the mother’s blood.

The test could save lives by removing the risk of miscarriage associated with current tests…Dr Frints, of Maastricht University Medical Centre in the Netherlands, has already created a kit that can work out if the baby is a boy or a girl. She is adapting the kit to test for Down’s syndrome and other genetic conditions could follow. Around 25,000 British women a year have invasive tests for Down’s syndrome, so the test has the potential to save 250 lives annually.

The statement in the story really meant “save the lives of normal babies.” These tests are intended as a search and destroy mission, to find and promote eradication of Down fetuses. The babies miscarried now as a result of invasive testing might be called collateral damage in the larger eugenic drive.

I am certainly in favor of preventing those miscarriages. And, of course, some families will use the information provided to prepare themselves and family for the arrival of a child with a disability, as did the Palins (for which some will never forgive them).

But the latter benefit isn’t the primary point of the test and certainly not why the medical establishment promotes universal pre-natal testing so enthusiastically. Frankly, they are not satisfied with a 90% termination rate.

But isn’t it ironic–that we will save some “good” babies, in order to find a better way to identify others to terminate. If babies of color were being similarly targeted it would be called racism.

This last year has been a journey of walking by faith for me because my husband and soul mate passed away on July 19, 2009. I have experienced many lows and few highs in my life during my grief. I look back and wonder how I managed to function well enough to deal with the disposal of my husband’s farm machinery, pay bills, and manage the farming operation.

I was blessed to have the help of friends and family get me through the rough times while my faith in God gave me the strength to get out of bed each day.

People deal with grief in many different ways and there is no right or wrong way or a timetable of getting over your grief. What we do have though is the great assurance of Jesus as he promised, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted” (Matthew 5:4). God beckons us into His loving arms so He can heal our wounded hearts.

While writing this article, I thought about the men and women who grieve the loss of their child from the sin of abortion. No matter how the pro-choice crowd wants to spin the act of abortion, the truth is every woman who has had an abortion has undergone a real death experience … the death of her very own child. But, the way these women deal with their grief is usually very different from the way people deal with the death of a loved one.

The woman who grieves the loss of the child that was killed from abortion often hides her grief. Society doesn’t acknowledge that a child died, so the woman naturally hides her sorrow. The death of this woman’s child isn’t afforded a funeral, there is no grave to visit, no consolation from friends, family or clergy because she is usually alone with the knowledge of what she has done.

The woman may be haunted with the thought that “I allowed my baby to be killed” and they eventually may find themselves unable to deal with the guilt. It may take many months or even years before the proper help is made available because of the reluctance of the mental medical community to recognize the many phases of post-abortion grief.

Folks both inside and outside of the medical and scientific community agree that stem cell research affords one of the most exciting and promising means for treating patients with a variety of diseases and conditions. Stem cell research and treatments represent perhaps our greatest opportunity to fulfill that ancient call to “heal the sick,” relieve suffering and improve the quality of life for untold millions of people.

Recently scientists have discovered how to reprogram human blood cells to mimic embryonic stem cells. The research, published in Cell Stem Cell, may offer one more way to produce the cells without the destruction of human life. That's why pro-life advocates are especially encouraged by this breakthrough.

Judith Staerk, a researcher at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research stated that there are additional advantages. “Blood is the easiest, most accessible source of cells,” she said, "because you’d rather have 20 milliliters of blood drawn than have a punch biopsy taken to get skin cells."

Dr. David Prentice, senior fellow for Life Sciences, Center for Human Life and Bioethics for the Family Research Council, said so far such advances are also proving the most successful. “There are enough cells available in a sample of blood that you can immediately start making the (embryonic-like) cells,” he said.

“When it comes down to actually treating patients,” he said, “right now, it’s adult stem cells that are still the only successful stem cell to treat disease.”

I firmly believe that God will never allow success using embryonic stem cells to treat people because it destroys a human life in the process of obtaining the cells. It’s simply morally wrong to intentionally kill one human life in order to benefit another.

The bible tells us that human existence begins at conception.

Jeremiah 1:4-5, The Word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you, before you were born I sent you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”

The international opinion of embryologists agrees with the Word of God that life begins at fertilization. At that very moment of conception, the embryo is 100% human and can never be anything but human with all 46 human chromosomes and a fully functioning, unique genetic code. The size and location of that embryo should not determine its humanity.

President Obama continues his assault on the value of human life with his recent
recess appointment of Donald Berwick as the head of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Berwick has publicly advocated rationing care for the vulnerable … meaning the elderly and the sickest of our nationʼs citizens.
The
recess appointment sidestepped strong opposition from pro-life leaders who would have certainly asked probing questions on Berwickʼs stand for government-imposed rationing of medical care.

Berwick was quoted in June of 2009 in the journal of Biotechnology Healthcare, “The decision is not whether or not we will ration care – the decision is whether we will ration with our eyes open.”

These are chilling words to me and should be
to every American citizen. As early as 1994 Berwick wrote in the Journal of the American Medical Association, "Most metropolitan areas in the United States should reduce the number of centers engaging in cardiac surgery, high-risk obstetrics, neonatal intensive care, organ transplantation, tertiary cancer care, high-level trauma care, and high-technology imaging"

What drives this man to promote rationing healthcare? The answer lies in reducing costs. Cutting per capita healthcare costs will have immediate results if expensive medical treatment is reduced for those who need it most. For instance, cardiac surgery, high-risk obstetrics, and trauma care are just a few examples representing expensive advanced technology in medicine.

If these patients are
simply allowed to die, healthcare costs per capita will go down. In other words, Obama is setting the stage for folks of his choosing to play God with American lives. Berwick has joined Obamaʼs stable of czars, making Berwick the death czar.

With the truth before you, what will you do about it? Will you make a stand FOR LIFE? Or sit by silently while the culture of death creeps even further into our lives?

Pro-life advocates gathered in Green Bay, WI on July 23-24 for the annual Lutherans for Life conference. Bringing Good News to Life, the theme for the 2010 conference, reminded me of the Good News of salvation through faith in Christ and how Christ died so all believers can have Life!

The conference speakers educated the attendees on current life issues. Some of the topics covered were bioethics, physician assisted suicide/euthanasia, sharing a pro-life message to a secular world, reaching out to young people, and basic human rights.

Wesley Smith, author, attorney and bioethicist was the keynote speaker on Friday evening sharing his thoughts on the topic of The Need For Good News: The Death Culture and Ways to Fight It.

Mr. Smith made the point several times in his speech that our society is intent on eliminating suffering which quickly turns into eliminating the sufferer.

He said the culture of death is “very powerful and wants us to believe that being a human doesn’t matter … and that is very dangerous.”

Mr. Smith also proclaimed that we must offer both hope and facts when witnessing for life because “the facts are on our side.”

It was a fast paced, but uplifting two days of learning how to be better informed on current life issues.

Lay people and pastors alike should be educating their family, friends, co-workers and society in general about the evils of abortion and other life issues. I believe that Dr. Lamb summed it up best in the following statements.

Failing to preach about abortion offends women more grievously that preaching about it.” Dr. Lamb further exclaims, “If the sin of abortion is never mentioned, then the Gospel – that Gospel pastors have been called to proclaim – is never applied to that sin nor to those caught up in the pain and guilt of abortion. Instead, Satan whispers through the silence, ‘This sin is so awful, even Jesus can’t forgive you.”’

The good news is that, no matter how serious the sin, God is always seeking us out and is willing to forgive and forget our sins and give us a fresh start. As long as we live, it is never too late to ask for forgiveness and make a new start!

Where's the money? That's the question on everyone's mind after reading the recently released Government Accountability Office report. The GAO numbers on money paid out to Planned Parenthood between 2002 and 2008 reveal an unaccounted-for $1.3B.

No answers have been forthcoming. In typical Planned Parenthood style, the abortion giant has done nothing to shed light on the question. In fact, it has done just the opposite....

After weeks of investigation by ALL's Stop Planned Parenthood project, it appears the reason the GAO was not able to account for the expenditure of the great majority of the government money received is that PP will not produce its internal audits for the GAO to analyze.

Because of this, the GAO had to rely on reports filed by PP affiliates under the Single Audit Act, and those reports grossly underreport the amount of government money expended by PP.

The American taxpayers are left with more questions now than before:

Why didn't Planned Parenthood hand over its internal audits to the GAO as it did in 2001 in the face of a similar inquiry into its spending?

Why is the organization allowed to disregard the request of 31 U.S. senators and representatives to account for its expenditure of government funds? What is Planned Parenthood hiding?

Why do we continue to fund PP to the tune of $349M annually and not hold it accountable for how it spends that money?

Most important, why is an organization that kills more than 300k innocent unborn children each year sanctioned and funded by our government?...

PP used to supply service reports annually, but when facts about client loyalty and the targeting of minorities for abortions were highlighted by pro-life groups, PP stopped making the service reports public around 1992.

Fast-forward to 2010. For the past several years, those opposed to Planned Parenthood have been making public the facts and figures from PP's annual reports. These facts have shown the ever-increasing number of abortions performed: 244,628 (2003), 255,015 (2004), 264,943 (2005), 289,750 (2006) and 305,310 (2007), and the huge increase in taxpayer funds going to the organization (from $265.2M in 2004 to $349.6M in 2008).  In the midst of all the controversy over the GAO report... it appears that PP... has decided simply to stop issuing its annual report.

We don't know how many abortions Planned Parenthood facilities performed in 2008 or 2009 because it is not releasing the numbers. We don't know the extent of government funding during its 2008-09 or 2009-10 fiscal years because it is not releasing the numbers.

If PP - a tax-exempt organization bankrolled to a staggering extent by the government - won't hand over its internal audits or let the public know the details of its operations, our government should stop handing over the taxpayers' hard-earned dollars to the organization....

But what about the women who have been hurt and have even died under the “safe haven” care of the Hope Clinic?

"The doctors were getting lazy when I was there. They are inducing a lot more women to speed up the process. I've seen some stuff and frankly am tired of the clinic... I hate all the bad things they are doing, putting lives in danger!" ~ former Hope Clinic employee.

Another employee has stated, "It is an assembly line inside there." The last nurse they hired refused to run the O.R. rooms due to liability issues with these careless abortionists. Currently the "deadly Dixon duo" sisters are running them, with Clara being the certified nurse's aide. In December, Hope Clinic contracted a former nurse to work on a per diem basis, which pays more money than a hired employee to sign out records, etc. She has not returned since. There have been many documented cases of women being rushed across the street to the hospital from the Hope Clinic because of complications from one of their abortions.

Also, Hope Clinic has been guilty of covering up cases of rape and incest while proceeding with abortions

There are many walking wounded in our society who are trying to deal with the aftermath of their abortion. Back in 1973, what was once thought to be the cure-all for society's ills and to empower women has turned out to be a devastating cancer on society. Abortion is the most un-natural act on a woman's life and her body and we know what it does to the innocent body within. It has had a ripple effect on all of those involved. And society is now reaping what has been allowed to happen over the past 37 years when this horrible holocaust was unleashed. Abortion leaves two victims: one dead and one wounded.

University of Minnesota researchers have used non-embryonic stem cells to treat successfully children with a lethal skin disease.

Another team of researchers, meanwhile, reported Aug. 16 they had used a different form of non-embryonic stem cells to provide therapies for laboratory rats with Parkinson's Disease.

Using adult stem cells from donor bone marrow or donor umbilical cord blood, the Minnesota scientists treated children with recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB), a severe form of epidermolysis bullosa (EB). EB, which also affects the lining of the mouth and esophagus, causes skin to blister, which can lead to infections and a virulent form of skin cancer. The disease has been regarded as incurable. Most children with EB do not survive their 20s.

The research team, led by John Wagner and Jakub Tolar, has transplanted adult stem cells into 10 children since 2007. The recipients have responded to a variety of degrees, Wagner said.

"This discovery is more unique and more remarkable than it may first sound," Tolar said. "... What we have found is that stem cells contained in bone marrow can travel to sites of injured skin, leading to increased production of collagen which is deficient in patients with RDEB. Bone marrow transplantation is one of the riskiest procedures in medicine, yet it is also one of the most successful. Patients who otherwise would have died from their disease can often now be cured. It's a serious treatment for a serious disease."

David Prentice, senior fellow for life sciences at Family Research Council, posted an Aug. 12 report about the Minnesota research on the organization's weblog. The study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Meanwhile, researchers at the Buck Institute for Age Research in Novato, Calif., used human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) to treat Parkinson's in rats, they reported. The iPSCs were derived from skin and blood cells and converted into neurons, then transplanted into rats with mid-brain injuries similar to those in human beings with Parkinson's. The rats demonstrated improvements in their motor skills, they said.

"Human iPSCs may provide an end-run around immuno-rejection issues surrounding the use of human embryonic stem cells (ESCs) to treat disease," said researcher Xianmin Zeng. "They may also solve bioethical issues surrounding [embryonic stem cells]."

The extraction of embryonic stem cells requires the destruction of the tiny human embryos from which they are taken. Extracting iPSCs and other non-embryonic stem cells does not harm the donor.

On Wednesday, August 25, Thomas More Society attorneys filed a motion to immediately transfer the legal case pending against the Illinois Parental Notice of Abortion Act from the Illinois Appellate Court to the Illinois Supreme Court. Arguing that pregnant minors at risk for abortion suffer harm every day that the Act is not enforced, the Society invoked the Supreme Court rule allowing transfer of an appeal when the "public interest requires prompt adjudication." The pending appeal, brought by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), is currently in the Illinois Appellate Court, First District, where a decision may not come for a year or more.

Just Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 24, Attorney General Lisa Madigan, who is constitutionally obligated to defend the Parental Notice Act, joined the ACLU in opposing speedy resolution of the case by the Supreme Court. Earlier, after the trial judge threw out the ACLU's case, the Attorney General agreed to an indefinite stay of the Parental Notice Act during the ACLU's current appeal.

Thomas More Society wants to thank John-Paul Deddens, President of Students for Life of Illinois, who built the website www.letparentsknow.com, in order to support the Parental Notice Act. A coalition of pro-life and pro-family groups across Illinois have joined the website and the effort, and in response, thousands of Illinoisans called and petitioned the Attorney General over the past week to urge her to support the immediate resolution of the case by the Supreme Court.

The fate of the motion now rests in the hands of the Illinois Supreme Court, where "the Supreme Court or a justice thereof may order that the appeal be taken directly to it."

The divide between his rhetoric and reality continues to mount: President Obama’s health care law is creating government rationed health care.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced Wednesday, September 1, that $17 million in taxpayer funds would be used to create “comparative effectiveness research” –a term identified during the health care debate as a means to rationed care.

HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said the funds would create a network of “patient-centered outcomes research” (PCOR) – the new name for comparative effectiveness research – to “improve health outcomes” for “diverse and vulnerable” populations.

In a 2009 report to Congress, the PCOR predecessor, the Federal Coordinating Council for Comparative Effectiveness Research, outlined its priority:

“The priority populations specifically include, but are not limited to, racial and ethnic minorities, persons with disabilities, children, the elderly, and patients with multiple chronic conditions,” the coordinating council said.

An often-cited quote during the health care debate was made by President Obama in an interview with The New York Times:

“The chronically ill and those toward the end of their lives are accounting for potentially 80 percent of the total health care bill out here….There is going to have to be a very difficult democratic conversation that takes place.”

Tom Minnery, senior vice president of government and public policy for CitizenLink, urged Americans not to give up – or to consider health care ‘fait accomplis.’

Life Lines for September 19, 2010

Dr. Seuss, author of numerous children’s books, wrote a book in 1954 titled “Horton Hears A Who.” This delightful story relates the story of Horton, a lovable, elephant with big ears and an even bigger heart. When a sound from a small puff of dust catches Horton’s ear, he’s blown away by the idea that there could be an entire world just like his floating around unseen.

Horton, with his sensitive hearing, is the only person who can hear the pleas for help from the microscopic world of the Whos, a world so tiny that it fits on a speck of dust. During his quest to protect the Whos, Horton repeats the phrase, “a person is a person, no matter how small.”

True words indeed! A person is a person, no matter how small. It is a fact that at the very moment of conception, a new human life has begun. What is even more fantastic is the fact that at the precise moment that the tiny new life begins, God creates a soul that is immediately joined with that body and a new person comes into being.

This newly formed human person is also sacred because the hand of God was present in its creation. This new little person is endowed with free will and was created in the image of God. Everything this new little person needs is present at conception … as long as it is allowed to develop in its mother’s womb.

God already has a purpose in mind for this new little person, as His Word tells us in Jer. 1:5  "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations."

This new little person that is growing and developing in its mother’s womb is entitled to protection and allowed to live a life of love and service to God its maker.

Just as Horton knew that “a person is a person, no matter how small”, we should never forget that simple message.

Are you doing all you can do to help stop the slaughter of the unborn?

Hats off to law makers in Missouri for recently passing into law an informed-consent amendment that requires abortion clinics to tell clients that their abortion will “terminate the life of a separate, unique, living human being.”

What this means is that Missouri, the “Show Me” state is legally recognizing that life begins at the very moment of conception.

Abortion providers in Missouri now must provide this information to a woman, in person, who is seeking an abortion and the information must be given 24 hours prior to the abortion procedure.

The CEO of Planned Parenthood in St. Louis, Paula Gianino, is already whining about the law calling it an unfair burden on many women. She claims that the law forces women to drive to the clinic in order to be given the abortion information in person, and then they have to wait another 24 hours prior to getting the abortion. Gianino stated, “It’s only purpose is to make it harder for them, by costing them more money, and keeping them longer away from their jobs and families.”

What Gianino failed to say was that it might benefit the women to have all of the facts and have time to consider all of the facts prior to making a life changing decision.

The new law goes even further than informed consent by also requiring that the abortion minded woman sign a release indicating that the abortion provider has offered her access to an ultrasound image of her baby.

In addition to these important parts of the new law, Missouri also added a clause stating that no abortions can be funded by the federal medical health-insurance plans. Missouri joins four other states, Arizona, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee, to make use of the option provided in the federal plan that allows states to prohibit the plan from paying for abortions.

I applaud the state of Missouri for this life-protecting legislation and pray that one day soon we will have more pro-life legislation in Illinois.

Never underestimate the creativity and excellence of our scientists. New research seems to have overcome the difficulties of IPSCs, allowing pluripotent stem cells to be created from normal body cells without using genes or viruses. From the story in the Washington Post:

In 2006, researchers discovered that they could coax adult cells into a state that appeared identical to embryonic stem cells, dubbed induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS cells), by activating four genes. Those cells could morph into various tissues in the same way that embryonic stem cells can. But the process involved inserting genes into cells using retroviruses, which raised the risk the cells could cause cancer. Since then, scientists have been racing to develop alternative methods. Several approaches, using chemicals or other types of viruses, have shown promise. But none has completely eliminated the safety concerns, and most have been slow and inefficient.

The new approach involves molecules known as “messenger RNA,” or mRNA, which the DNA inside cells use to create proteins they need carry out various vital functions. The researchers created mRNA molecules carrying the instructions for the cell’s machinery to produce the four key proteins needed to reprogram themselves into iPS cells.

After tinkering with the mRNA molecules in the laboratory to make signals that the cells would not destroy as dangerous invaders, the researchers found that a daily cocktail of their creations were surprisingly fast and efficient at reprogramming the cells. The approach converted the cells in about half the time of previous methods – only about 17 days – with surprising economy – up to 100 times more efficient than the standard approach.

Moreover, detailed tests indicated the cells had not experienced any disturbing changes in their DNA caused by previous methods and were virtually identical to embryonic stem cells. In addition, the researchers went one step further and showed that they could use the approach to then coax the iPS cells they created into a specific type of cell, in this case muscle cells.

I have three observations:

First, this story validates President Bush’s faith in the science sector’s capacity to find ethical ways to do what scientists used to claim only ESCR could accomplish. In fact, I think Bush deserves some credit for these advances because his policy kept society focused so closely on the moral issues surrounding the embryo.

Second: Even if this advance did EVERYTHING that scientists wanted from ESCR, it won’t stop many from wanting to experiment on nascent human life.  Indeed, some would look at the advance, shrug, and keep on trying to clone. Why? Because stem celladvances are not the end game. As I wrote here, they are merely the opening stanza of a much longer symphony that seeks to open the door to Brave New World technologies such as genetic engineering and enhancement, that requires cloning and experimenting on the resulting embryos to perfect.

Third: Obama should restore the Bush policy he revoked giving priority to NIH funding for non embryonic research into sources of pluripotent stem cells. But he won’t.  Many among his base loathe the very idea that a human embryo would have any moral standing.

The Coalition on Abortion/Breast Cancer notes that microbiologist Gerard Nadal, PhD is exposing on his blog the National Cancer Institute's (NCI) cover-up of the abortion-breast cancer (ABC) link at its 2003 workshop entitled, "Early Reproductive Events and Breast Cancer." Dr. Nadal, who has taught at St. John's University and Manhattan College, accused the organizer of the workshop, NCI branch chief Dr. Louise Brinton, of having "done violence to the truth." He compared her statements about the ABC link to a Wimbledon match and charged that she and her colleagues are "sincerely unethical and corrupt."

Dr. Leslie Bernstein, a leader/moderator at the workshop, gave her reasons for covering up the ABC link in an interview with CancerPage.com a few days after the workshop had concluded. She said: "There are so many other messages we can give women about lifestyle modification and the impact of lifestyle and risk that I would never be a proponent of going around and telling them that having babies is the way to reduce your risk....I don't want the issue relating to induced abortion to breast cancer risk to be part of the mix of the discussion of induced abortion its legality, its continued availability. I think it should not be part of the argument." [1]

The NCI's misconduct was previously revealed in a detailed letter to President Obama and Congressional leaders on January 25, 2010 which called for a Congressional investigation of the NCI and its failure to issue timely warnings about the breast cancer risks of abortion and oral contraceptives. [2] Those signing the letter include the Coalition on Abortion/Breast Cancer, two scientists - Dr. Nadal and Professor Joel Brind - three medical groups, 15 physicians and 19 pro-family organizations. So far, Obama and Congressional leaders have not exhibited the slightest interest in protecting women's lives.

Dr. Nadal has promised to review one study on the ABC link every day until he has exhausted all of the research in January or February of 2011.

So many lives have been destroyed since abortion became legalized in our nation. Actually, over 50 million babies have lost their lives over the past nearly 38 years. Only God knows the talents and gifts these humans could have contributed to our society.

But, just a few people who are alive today because their mother chose life for them, despite advice from their medical doctor to abort the child are international singing star Susan Boyle, blind Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli, and football star Tim Tebow.

But, there are other extraordinary lives that have been saved because the mother chose life.

Baby Deacon Lewis is a lively, healthy baby who sleeps right through the night and is a joy to his proud parents.

But Deacon, who is now six months old, was almost aborted after doctors told his mother he almost certainly suffered from a chromosome disorder that would eventually kill him.

Dawn Lewis, 26, says she was advised to have an abortion when a routine 12-week scan showed her child had Edward's syndrome. The condition causes serious heart and kidney problems with less than half of babies surviving beyond eight weeks.

After four years of trying for a baby, Miss Lewis and her partner Jonathan Blemmings, 26, a construction worker, were devastated. But Miss Lewis, a childminder, refused to have an abortion and decided to seek a second opinion on her baby's condition.

She was referred to the specialist maternity hospital where a more sophisticated test found no evidence of the disorder. She said: 'I was absolutely delighted to find my baby was healthy but also horrified that I could have had him aborted.I was shocked that I had been advised to have a termination without first being offered a second scan and further tests. Thankfully we decided to pursue a second opinion because if we hadn't then Deacon may not have been here today.'

Today we Lutherans will celebrate Reformation Sunday … the birthday of the Lutheran Church.

493 years ago today on October 31, 1517, a young man named Martin Luther posted a list of 95 theses and also requested a meeting with church leaders to debate the crux of the 95 theses.

Martin Luther surely had no clue what his actions would accomplish or the change it would bring upon the church. By posting those 95 theses, a domino effect took place and lead to the events that today we refer to as the Protestant Reformation.

By comparison, attorney Sarah Weddington, the initial attorney in the famous Roe v. Wade case, could have no idea that her actions would eventually result in the legal killing of over 50 million babies in the womb. Weddington was recently quoted saying, “We did it, not because we knew we could win, but because we had to try. It turned out we did win, and I do think that changed the world for women in a very basic way.” Yes, Ms. Weddington certainly did change the world for women and Martin Luther changed the world through religion. Both actions were a reformation, but one paved the way for salvation through faith while the second one paved the way to slaughter the unborn.

More and more Americans, a majority in fact, believe that abortion is simply not right and I believe we are poised for another Reformation … this time it is a Reformation for Life and it is up to Christians to not only lead the way, but the take part in the fight to save the unborn, elderly and disabled.

How can any Christian not take action against the senseless killing of babies in the womb? No matter what the circumstances of conception, no matter how far along in the pregnancy, abortion always ends the life of an individual human being.

The second annual Life Banquet was held on Thursday, October 28, 2010 at Hamilton’s in Jacksonville. It was a great gathering of pro-life supporters who were treated to a top-notch speaker in Abby Johnson.

During Ms. Johnson’s speech, she mentioned some groups who donate funds to Planned Parenthood, the largest provider of abortions in the U.S.

After the evening program, a couple spoke to me and asked for a list of donors to Planned Parenthood. I did some research and have included the following as recent supporters of Planned Parenthood for your review and consideration.

American Cancer Society, Camp Fire girls, The Dr. Phil Foundation, Girls Inc., Girl Scouts, Human Rights Watch, Kiwanis Clubs, the March of Dimes, Rotary Clubs, The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, and the YWCA.

Also, Tiffany & Company, Blackjack Pizza restaurants, Neiman Marcus, software maker Adobe, Wachovia, Golub (which operates Price Chopper supermarkets), Nike, Time Warner, Unilever, Bank of America, the Dallas Cowboys, CIGNA, Walt Disney, Johnson & Johnson, Wells Fargo, Whole Foods Market, Nationwide insurance, Ann Taylor, Ann Taylor Loft and Liz Clairborne.

People have the right to donate their money to any group or organization that they wish to. However, informed choices are always in the best interest of everyone so the preceding list is simply to inform.

Life does matter and pro-life voters proved that on Tuesday, November 2, 2010 when they “rocked the vote” in favor of life.

20 pro-life governors were elected nationwide and we also saw the election of a number of pro-life Attorneys General, giving us hope that abortion clinics will not be given carte blanche to evade and avoid state laws governing their killing business.

The overwhelming victory in the U.S. House and the election of a new speaker means that in the very near future, pro-life legislation will have a fighting chance instead of helping to profit the abortion industry at the expense of the American taxpayer.

We can also rejoice in the distressed comments of Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood. Ms. Richards remarked, “Yesterday was a difficult day” for the pro-abortion movement. Despite some bright spots in important races — and the resounding defeat of an anti-choice ballot initiative in Colorado — the House of Representatives is now in the hands of dangerous politicians,” she said. “There’s no getting around it: the results of yesterday’s election are truly alarming.”

“Starting today, we have a tough fight on our hands. The months ahead will not be easy. Anti-choice House leaders like John Boehner will be egged on by Sarah Palin and her followers,” she said, calling pro-life advocates “extremists” who will “pursue a dangerous agenda.”

“The stakes are as high as they’ve ever been: their goal is to outlaw abortion, even in cases of rape, incest, and harm to the health of the woman,” she said.

Richards launched into her organization’s main concern, a bill sponsored by pro-life Rep. Mike Pence that would de-fund Planned Parenthood.

“That’s the frightening reality we face, and it’s only going to get worse,” she said before asking for money to help fight it.

The “frightening reality” that Planned Parenthood may face is the very real possibility of pro-life leaders who actually have the courage and strength to defund their operation using taxpayer money. May God bless their efforts in that endeavor.

While contemplating my article for this Sunday I was thinking about the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday and my own personal faith in God. I have many sad days since the death of my dear husband, Rich, and I too often forget to give thanks to God for the many blessings I still have in my life. I have my children, a wide circle of friends, my health, my horses, and a lovely home and I am blessed to live in the greatest nation in the history of the world.

Yes, our nation is still a great nation, despite the dark deeds that take place in the abortion mills and offend our loving God.

While thinking about the Thanksgiving holiday, I was reminded of the last Thanksgiving proclamation given by George W. Bush. It is as follows:

November 21, 2008. A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America. Thanksgiving is a time for families and friends to gather together and express gratitude for all that we have been given, the freedoms we enjoy, and the loved ones who enrich our lives. We recognize that all of these blessings, and life itself, come not from the hand of man but from Almighty God.

Every Thanksgiving, we remember the story of the Pilgrims who came to America in search of religious freedom and a better life. Having arrived in the New World, these early settlers gave thanks to the Author of Life for granting them safe passage to this abundant land and protecting them through a bitter winter.

Our Nation's first President, George Washington, stated in the first Thanksgiving proclamation that "It is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor." While in the midst of the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln revived the tradition of proclaiming a day of thanksgiving, asking God to heal our wounds and restore our country.

Today, as we look back on the beginnings of our democracy, Americans recall that we live in a land of many blessings where every person has the right to live, work, and worship in freedom. Our Nation is especially thankful for the brave men and women of our Armed Forces who protect these rights while setting aside their own comfort and safety.

Their courage keeps us free, their sacrifice makes us grateful, and their character makes us proud. Especially during the holidays, our whole country keeps them and their families in our thoughts and prayers. Americans are also mindful of the need to share our gifts with others, and our Nation is moved to compassionate action. We pay tribute to all caring citizens who reach out a helping hand and serve a cause larger than themselves.

On this day, let us all give thanks to God who blessed our Nation's first days and who blesses us today. May He continue to guide and watch over our families and our country always.

It will be my sincere prayer that our nation will one day recognize what all pro-life believers already know in their hearts. All life is precious to God, the Author of Life, and should be and must be protected from conception to natural death.

For one day this city of rebellion and oppression will take correction and fear the Lord. God will remove from this city those who rejoiced in their pride. He will leave the remnant of Israel, who do no wrong, who speak no lies, nor will deceit be found in their mouths. And no harm shall come to them.”

Roland Burris may have gone home to Chicago, but he left his mark on Congress with the Burris Amendment, a measure that overturns the longstanding pro-life policy against abortions at taxpayer-funded military bases.

Current law prohibits abortions at the taxpayer-funded base hospitals both in the United States and abroad, but abortion advocates are rallying support for the legislation to overturn it.

So, what do the Senate members have planned upon returning to Washington after the Thanksgiving break? It’s a very real possibility that they may try to shove this life-killing legislation through during the lame duck session.

Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B. Anthony List, had the following comments. “We are most concerned about the Department of Defense Authorization bill. A previous version of this bill, defeated earlier this year, contained the Burris Amendment which would allow for abortions on military bases both here at home and abroad,” Dannenfelser added. “Pro-abortion Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid will be working overtime during the “lame duck” session to pass this bill, and if the bill contains the Burris Amendment, we must make sure that it is defeated.”

Democrats voted almost unanimously, 56-43, to allow debate on the bill and Democratic Sen. Ben Nelson of Nebraska, who maintains he is pro-life, joined them. Republicans unanimously voted in opposition to ending the filibuster, including pro-abortion members who wanted the chance to offer amendments to the bill.

A continuing resolution to keep the current funding in place expires on December 3. If Democrats can’t find enough votes for the funding bill, the resolution will remain in place and the pro-life side will win the battle, for now.

I find it unreasonable to ask military physicians and nurses to participate in the killing of human life when they are dedicated to “saving” lives on our military base hospitals. What an unnecessary assault on the psyche of people who are serving our nation.

Abortion advocates have tried for years to force military bases hospitals to do abortions on female service members. In 2006, the House rejected by a vote of 237-191, an amendment similar to the Burris amendment.

The Burris amendment is more expansive than a 2006 effort because it allows abortion on both domestic and overseas military base hospitals.

Since both U.S. Senators from Illinois are unashamed of their position that it’s perfectly fine to kill the unborn, calling them to oppose this legislation would more than likely prove fruitless. However, we do have a much better weapon in our arsenal to help stop this life killing legislation … PRAYER!

We can all pray that God would hear the prayers of the pro-life forces to stop the Burris Amendment in its tracks.

We are truly blessed to live in the U.S. It’s been said many times, but how many of us think about what it really means. I know that I am guilty of taking my life in this great nation for granted, as I am sure many of you are. We are a nation founded on Christianity, despite what some of our nations leaders say in contrast.

Our form of government grants us freedom and liberty and puts these rights in writing. I am always in awe of our founding fathers when I read the words of the Declaration of Independence. Here is an excerpt from the second paragraph:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness..

These words are the foundation of our government and guarantee that we are given rights by our Creator. The first right mentioned is the right to LIFE. Yet, since 1973, over 50 million babies have not been afforded the very “right to life” that is the foundation of our government. Abortion was only the beginning of the stripping of the right to life. Physician Assisted Suicide takes place in our nation, along with euthanasia and fetal farming. Apathetic people sit by while humans are being destroyed; yet they demonstrate on the front lines to save seals, whales, turtles, birds and much more.

The next assault from the culture of death on the horizon is “death panels” as part of Obamacare. Sarah Palin was ridiculed for warning us of the death panels months ago, but now we know it’s real. Just read the following clip from a syndicated news site and see what you think.

Paul Krugman, Nobel Prize winner in economics and an influential New York Times columnist, also has a blog, "The Conscience of a Liberal." On ABC's "This Week" (Nov. 14), during a discussion on balancing the federal budget against alarming deficits, he proclaimed the way to solve this problem is through deeply cost-effective health-care rationing.

"Some years down the pike," he said, "we're going to get the real solution, which is going to be a combination of death panels and sales taxes."

Yes, he used the words “death panels” which means in essence that your health and end of life decisions will not be made by your doctor and family, but by bureaucrats in Washington D.C. who have never met you and only know what they read about your health.

Americans must stand up and protest against this trend before it’s too late. The government is here to serve us and protect our lives, and not to assume a government right to our lives.

Scripps Research Institute scientists have made a significant leap forward in the drive to find a way to safely reprogram mature human cells and turn them into stem cells, which can then change into other cell types, such as nerve, heart, and liver cells. The ability to transform fully mature adult cells such as skin cells into stem cells has potentially profound implications for treating many diseases.

In research published in the December 3, 2010 issue of Cell Stem Cell, Scripps Research Associate Professor Sheng Ding, PhD, reports a novel cocktail of drug-like small molecules that, with the assistance of a gene called Oct4, enables reprogramming of human skin cells into stem cells..

"Our ultimate goal is to generate induced pluripotent stem cells with defined small molecules," Ding said. "This would offer a fundamentally new method and significant advantages over previous methods, such as genetic manipulation or more difficult-to-manufacture biologics.".

Using small-molecule compounds to reprogram adult human cells back to their pluripotent state able to change into all other cell types avoids the ethical controversy around embryonic stem cell research, and paves the way for the large-scale production of stem cells that could be used inexpensively and consistently in drug development. Cures for Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and many other diseases might be possible if new cells could be created from a patient's own cells to replace those that have succumbed to disease or injury.

It seems that this latest research victory in stem cell research came just in time because it appears that thanks to the significant gains the pro-life movement made in the November elections federal funding for embryonic stem cell research is dead in the water.
Two members of the House have been pushing legislation that would expand Obama’s executive order by overturning the 1996 Dickey-Wicker Amendment. That’s a federal law that prohibits federal funds from being used to pay for the destruction of human embryos.

Rep. Diana DeGette, a Colorado Democrat, and Rep. Mike Castle, a Delaware Republican, have spearheaded the effort to overturn the law and open the floodgates to significantly more taxpayer funding of the unproven and unethical research.
However, Castle sees the writing on the wall and knows such a bill will likely never be brought up for a debate under pro-life Speaker elect John Boehner.

It’s evident that absolutely nothing will pass in the next Congress,” Castle told The Hill, “so if we’re going to do it, we have to do it during this lame duck.”

If Congress doesn’t approve the measure this session, it’s likely that the pro-life movement will be able to fend off legislation to repeal the law to put more tax dollars behind research involving the destruction of human embryos until at least the 2013 session of Congress.

At that point, a pro-life president may occupy the White House and scale back the Obama order and put a renewed emphasis on adult stem cell research, the only type that has helped any patients and that is free from ethical and moral problems.

So, what does all of this mean? It means that the pro-life movement has not been in vain, we have made progress, but the battle is far from over and we must remain vigilant to the workings of our nation’s leaders.

To date, minors in the state of Illinois have been completely unprotected from the physical and psychological harms of abortion.

In 1995, legislators in the Illinois General Assembly passed the Illinois Parental Notice of Abortion Act (“Act”); but due to legal challenges by the ACLU and their allies, the law has been enjoined for 15 years. 

Even to a lawyer, 15 years of litigation is an incredible amount of time—especially considering the fact that many women who were minors at the time of enactment may have teen children themselves now who could be impacted and protected by the law.

In 2009, it appeared that the Seventh Circuit would finally put an end to the legal wrangling.  Rejecting a final challenge to the law, that court stated that the Act should go into effect immediately.  But due to an additional state court challenge by the ACLU—and the inherent problem of Illinois politics—the law was enjoined yet again.

At this point, the case rests with the First Appellate court in Illinois. 

Last month, attorneys on both sides—including Americans United for Life—filed written arguments in the case. AUL and our allies remain cautiously optimistic that the state appellate court will see what the Seventh Circuit saw: that the Act is constitutional, and that the ACLU’s current challenge is merely a thinly veiled attempt to delay the inevitable enforcement of a desperately needed (and constitutional) law.

Unfortunately, with every day that goes by, this delay in enforcement of the law impacts minors in irreparable ways.  As AUL pointed out in its Amicus Curiae brief (filed on behalf of Illinois legislators), minors are particularly susceptible to the physical and psychological risks of abortion.  Study after study has documented that heightened risks of infection, pre-term birth in subsequent pregnancies, and even suicide—just to name a few—plague minors who have had abortions.

The majority of states—31, to be exact—recognize the need to protect minors and maintain parental involvement laws.  As 2010 draws to a close, we are hopeful that 2011 holds new promise for minors in the state of Illinois.

Planned Parenthood Federation of America finally released its 2008-2009 Annual report detailing its financial figures. The report shows it received more government funding, which has translated into more abortions. The nation’s largest abortion business released a factsheet in September showing the number of abortions it performed in 2008 increased to 324,008, a 6.1 percent increase over the 305,310 abortions it did in 2007.

The total government grants and contracts received by PPFA affiliates from government sources including state, local and federal governments, increased from $337 million to $350 million in 2009. The new report shows that figure has increased again to $363 million, though it does not specify what portion of the figure was received from each level of government.

Government grants accounted for 33% of Planned Parenthood’s income compared with just 28 percent for private donations. Income from its abortion centers generated another 37 percent.

In 1997, Planned Parenthood did about 160,000 abortions and received approximately $160 million in total taxpayer funding from various levels of government. Both the number of abortions and the amount of money received from government, supposedly for family planning to reduce abortions, has more than doubled since then.

Rep. Mike Pence, the leading member behind legislation in Congress that would de-fund Planned Parenthood, is not happy about the new annual report the abortion business released. Pence, an Indiana congressman with potential presidential ambitions, made the statement, “It is morally wrong to end an unborn human life by abortion.  It is also morally wrong to take the taxpayer dollars of millions of pro-life Americans and use those funds to promote abortion. Planned Parenthood’s own report shows that the largest abortion provider in America is being bankrolled by American taxpayers.  With a nearly 10 percent unemployment rate, there is simply no reason during these tough economic times why taxpayers’ hard-earned money should fund the activities of abortion providers and equip them with the resources they need to end innocent human life. The time has come to deny any and all federal funding to Planned Parenthood by passing the Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act, which I intend to introduce again in the next Congress.”

Pence went on to say, “Originally, family planning services were not allowed to include abortions and currently federal dollars are not used directly for abortions. However, over the years, the subsidy of abortion providers under the umbrella of family planning has been gradually accepted.”

Clearly, government funding for Planned Parenthood has increased under both Republican and Democratic leadership. Regardless of who was in charge, government sanctioned snuffing of human life is unconscionable. What really concerns me most is the lack of interest that the general public has about what is happening. Where is the outcry from the American citizens? And why are the lawmakers in Washington thumbing their noses at the very folks who sent a clear message to them on Nov. 2, 2010 that we are tired of the insane spending in this country?

Let us not be weary in doing good; for at the proper time, we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good…” Galatians 6:9-10.
